Why do driving instructors need safeguarding training?

The instructor–learner relationship is one of the most private and unequal professional relationships in existence. Lessons take place in an enclosed vehicle with no third-party witness. Many learners are teenagers, neurodivergent, or in receipt of PIP — making them particularly vulnerable to grooming, emotional manipulation, and inappropriate conduct. Yet most ADIs receive no training in how to recognise these patterns, receive a disclosure, or navigate the reporting process with confidence.

About Jenny Williams

Jenny Williams is an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI No. 797207), DIA member, and holder of a BSc (Hons) in Psychology and Counselling. She is a trainee counsellor, Reiki Master, and Angelic Reiki Master based in the UK, where she runs her own driving school.

The safeguarding work at the heart of Jenny Williams Training was born from direct professional experience. Having identified and supported learners subjected to serious misconduct by another ADI — including sexual advances, inappropriate messaging, and neglect of duty during lessons — Jenny reported the instructor to the DVSA and police. The instructor was subsequently removed from the ADI register and is under investigation.

Drawing on her counselling training, psychological background, and first-hand experience of the reporting process, Jenny has developed safeguarding provision for the ADI profession that is grounded in real cases, informed by genuine expertise, and built around the learners who need it most.

Jenny Williams Training is the only provider in the ADI sector combining safeguarding compliance with trauma-informed advocacy — giving driving instructors not just the rules, but the skills and confidence to use them.
