Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI)
ITI is the leading independent professional membership body for practicing translators and interpreters in the UK. Founded in 1986 and with over 3,000 members ITI plays a key role within the language services industry in the UK and internationally.
ITI offers a range of memberships designed to support translators and interpreters at each step of their career. We also welcome project managers, corporate members and academic institutions into our membership. In addition to its UK membership base, ITI has a large and growing international membership in continental Europe and other countries where the English language is commonly used.
They are fully committed to supporting their members in their professional development, allowing them to maintain the highest possible standards within the profession. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is an integral part of ITI membership and is enshrined in their Professional Code of Conduct as follows:
PRINCIPLE 2 – PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE
2.1 Continuing professional development
2.1.1 For as long as they continue in practice, members and, in the case of corporate members, their translator and interpreter employees, are required to undertake continuing professional development as appropriate, in order to continue to offer the highest possible standards of work by maintaining and updating their language skills, subject knowledge or any other skills or knowledge necessary for the work.
ITI actively encourage all of their members to engage in and commit to training and development as part of their professional working life, recommending that all individual members undertake a minimum of 30 hours of CPD each membership year. A valuable benefit of ITI membership is its CPD logging tool that allows members to log and keep track of their CPD achievements as part of their digital member record. Once members have recorded 30 hours on the ITI CPD log, they are awarded a certificate and a ‘CPD Achieved’ logo.
